What is Hospice Care?

What hospice care means is that it is a special type of care in which the quality of life for patients and their caregivers is the main focus behind the decisions being made by the clinician team. Patients and families could be in situations where it may not be possible to cure a serious illness, or a patient may choose not to undergo certain aggressive treatments. Hospice care is tailored for these kinds of situations and commonly provided at the patient's home.

"Like palliative care, hospice provides comprehensive comfort care as well as support for the family, but, in hospice, attempts to cure the person's illness are stopped. Hospice is provided for a person with a terminal illness whose doctor believes he or she has 6 months or less to live if the illness runs its natural course."
